Virtual Servers for a Virtual World

The nature of the internet dictates that the inner workings of engines will always be behind the scenes, and rightfully so. Though many rely on multiple search engine servers and the various routers they employ on a daily basis, few would feel more comfortable with them located next to their desktop. In much the same way, virtual dedicated servers and virtual applications have given countless individuals, organizations and businesses the ability to equip themselves with the hardware and software firepower they need without having to become fully vested in costly overhead.

For many businesses at the enterprise level, the idea of avoiding the hassles of server maintenance and monitoring, assembling the right configuration and purchasing their applications of choice can have the same benefits as would outsourcing a large portion of an IT budget. For smaller businesses, it’s simply a matter of long term economics. Dedicated virtual servers give growing companies the ability to adjust their needs from plan to plan as business progresses. They also keep the initial costs of doing business comparatively low, which is especially welcome for cash starved startups. However, not all virtual hardware and software providers are created equal.

Most virtual platforms are relatively rigid in their offerings, which often means choosing between price points associated with far too much or not quite enough memory, RAM, monitoring and data transferring capability. While the problems with being under equipped with the necessary hardware are evident, the problems surrounding overpayment for unnecessary services can be just as financially unfeasible when considered over the long term. Many providers offer a wide range of service plans, yet few allow clients to alter service plans for their particular business needs. For this reason, it’s economically sound to find a virtual server provider who offers a wide range of customization offerings along with the base options. From data intensive applications requiring more memory to transaction based applications in need of more memory for fast load times, no two businesses’ needs are alike.

Complete virtualization, service and support are also areas where virtual services providers can vary widely. From simplicities such as redundant power supplies and virtualization of the components found on all servers to scalability, hardware quality and free monitoring, it’s important to look at what’s included with a base plan and what will add additional expense. Many base service plans are incredibly affordable at first glance, yet once the services that other providers offer for free are added on, the price difference can be substantial.

Of course, the ultimate consideration when choosing a virtual server and application provider, once all options are accounted for, is price. As with typical web hosting, signing on for an extended timeframe should afford the buyer a lower monthly fee.
