Is VoIP The Solution Businesses Have Been Waiting For?
December 17, 2007 on 7:05 am | In Business | No CommentsWhen Voice over Internet Protocol was first made available, many were calling it the most revolutionary business communications option since PBX systems were made widely available in the 1950’s. Indeed, VoIP phone systems have given the business world another option, but is it the holy grail of savings so many were promised with its introduction into the mainstream?
Yes…and no. VoIP can be extremely expensive to set up, especially for enterprise level businesses with even average communications requirements. In many cases, it’s actually cheaper over both the long and short term to use existing phone system equipment and research the best rate plan (provided the equipment isn’t rented from the phone company, which is a rarity these days).
For smaller businesses, VoIP can be a money saver. Businesses that aren’t reliant on their telephone system for revenue generation would do well to see what kind of savings they can expect from internet based communications. Because reliability is rarely an issue for these businesses, the added chance of losing phone service temporarily that accompanies VoIP isn’t so much of a consideration.
In the end, VoIP is suitable for some businesses and less ideal for others. Consequently, it’s also more cost effective for some businesses and much less so for others. The best option for companies contemplating a switch to VoIP would be to research all the options, potential savings included, and decide accordingy.
